The Cyber Criminals come up with innovative ways to cheat, all the while. Once news of a particular scam spreads wide, they invent for another or re-launch an old one. For example, the fraud job offer email in the name of non existent company, "GCI Enterprises" had gone stale and hence the Criminal Gang has launched SMS Campaign offering Free Philips DVD.
A few months ago this SMS was being circulated as Free DVD from VIDEOCON. Since that became stale, the gang stopped the campaign and has now re-launched in the name of Philips>

The SMS reads as follows: "Dear Customer! Congratulations! Your mobile phone number has been selected as winner for Free Philips DVD Player!. For More information, please visit www.philipsnewdvd.com"
The website off course is fake and created by the criminal gang. Its made in such a way to look like official Philips website (http://www.india.philips.com) with Philips logo and color scheme. An unwary user who visits this fake website is asked to pay Rs.440 as service tax and as soon as payment is made, Free DVD will be sent to him!
Well instead of paying Rs.440 to Philips India, the fake website asks to pay money into bank account of 2 people.
Not even fools are expected to pay money, to private accounts of individuals. BUT that is just our expectation. In India, we can get any number of people, who will go ahead and transfer money to the accounts of the criminals, blinded by such offers. And this unfortunate truth, drives the criminals to come up with such fraud offers, again and again.
Lessons to be Learned:
- Do not get fooled by statement "Your Mobile Number" or "Your Email ID" is selected. When we receive an SMS or email offering job or prize since our mobile number or email Id is selected, remember the SAME, SMS would have been received by lakhs of people. So do lakhs of people become winners? Instead of donating money to criminals, sit on your hard earned money.
- Never click a link and visit a website when you receive such mails. The website will be fraud. No need to spend time checking website. Simply delete the mail.
- When an SMS is received with website id with offer, again the website will be a fake one. Simply delete SMS
- Always remember to report such fraud to www.Complaints-India.com by publishing complaints
A large number of our users have proactively published the "Philips DVD SMS" at Complaints-India. Philips has reacted fast and has published Public Notice: The Notice is also published in all National Dailies. Its hoped, the spread of the information about this Fake SMS Offer will reach all people and help them from being cheated.
