Myself and my family (Anima Acharya and Sarthak Acharya) were travelling from Kolkata to Sydney via Bangkok on 29 January 2011 by Kingfisher and Thai Airlines.

Our Thai PNR was TG\\IP56Z9 and TG\\IP3RWP. The Kingfisher PNR was IT\\ILGKQV and IT\\IKJYED respectively.

On 29 January, when I checked in Kolkata Airport with my family, our luggage for 3 people was weighing 66 Kilo. They charged me for 4 kilo for Kolkata to Bangkok . Further they also charged me INR 6,572 from Bangkok to Sydney saying that they have to give that money to Thai Airlines. (I can produce receipt for that). I told them that Thai allows up to 30 Kilo and we 3 can have only 66 Kilos, but my request was not accepted and I had to pay.

I contacted Customer Care of Kingfisher. They replied in justifying their action.

Then I contacted Thai Airlines, whether Kingfisher Airlines has paid them any money for my Excess Baggage. They replied on 7 March that Kingfisher has provided them information that there was no excess baggage so they have not paid anything to them.

It is a clear case of extortion of passengers who travel in more than 1 connecting airlines.

I wrote to Customer Care Division of Kingfisher on 7th March requesting to refund the amount, but they are not replying to me.

The email of Thai has been pasted nelow:

Subject: RE: Wrong charge by Kingfisher in the name of Thai Airlines
Dear Mr Acharya,

With regards to your query below, we wish to advice our current policy for tickets issued on Thai Airways International in economy class they show endorsement of 20 kilos being the free check-in baggage allowance. For our passengers who are flying 100% on Thai Airways International to their destination, from Australian cities we are currently permitting them an allowance of up to 30 kilos free of charge ( this is only ex Australia, therefore upon returning from the destination, normal baggage rates for excess baggage will apply). Therefore confirming the offer of 30 kilos would not apply to your travel on this occasion due to your partial travel on Kingfisher airlines. If we accepted your baggage at 30 kilos we would risk being charged by the other airline for excess baggage uncollected. According to our check-in records your tickets were not issued on Thai Airways International, and you were never travelling 100% on THAI. In this case the baggage allowance rules which apply to the ticketed carrier apply for the total journey.

According to your check in records for flight TG477/29Jan from Bangkok to Sydney for your family, total of 3 passengers, your check in baggage weight is recorded as 3/60 which is 3 bags consisting of 20 kilos per bag on average, which as you are aware is the permitted free baggage allowance on THAI, therefore it seems quite strange that King Fisher air should be paying us for excess baggage.

We cannot take responsibility for the charges incurred with King Fisher Air and would kindly direct you to contact them again to reconfirm their policy as to why you were charged.

Regards,

Denise Cheesman
