The city crime branch police have arrested two masterminds involved in a serious of cheating cases in which they used to target herbal and cosmetic product supplying agencies to procure bulk orders running up to several lakhs of rupees and issue fake cheques to them. They later used to resell the products in the grey market and make fast money claimed city police. The duo had apparently pulled off similar crimes in various states including Andhra Pradesh, New Delhi, Kerala and parts of Tamil Nadu. They were nabbed on the basis of a complaint lodged with the police in which they had issued fake cheques to the tune of Rs 30.5 lakh. The accused used to approach suppliers initially through email and later they used to visit them also. But once the cheque is handed over and the suppliers start calling them for the pending payment they used to be untraceable," said M Selvarajan, Assistant Commissioner, City crime Branch. According to police, the mastermind of the gang was Purushothaman a resident of Vellalore locality who along with his accomplice Khaja Huseein alias Karthik of Ukkadam had floated a firm called Sri Managaladarshan corporation near Sundarapuram in the city. They had appointed a manager for the firm Satheesh Kumar who was reportedly being used as a frontman for all financial transactions and business dealings. Purushothaman used to take special care and caution to ensure that he was not directly involved in any of the illegal dealings," Selvarajan added. The city police initiated a probe against them after Rajkumar, a resident of Sidha Pudhur locality lodged a complaint that he was given fake cheques to the tune of Rs 10.5 lakh and Rs 30.5 lakh from Sri Mangaladarshan corporation for the delivery of a cosmetic consignment. He claimed that initially he was given a cheque of Rs 10.5 lakh which bounced and he contacted Sateeshkumar following which another cheque was issued and he was assured that he could cash it without any difficulty. However the complainant could not cash any of the cheques and he also could not contact the firm officials who switched off their cell phones and became untraceable," said M Selvarajan. Police suspect that the duo might have duped several herbal and cosmetic suppliers in this manner and have appealed to the victims to come forward and register the complaint. A manhunt has been launched to nab the rest of the people involved in the racket and the arrested duo was remanded to custody. |
