Police on Friday arrested a 42-year-old godman for allegedly taking advantage of a woman who approached him for help. The matter came to light when a woman complained to the police that the godman, identified as Meerut resident Sultan, cheated her of thousands of rupees and tried to sexually assault her. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Chhaya Sharma said, “The woman had personal issues, because of which she decided to seek the godman’s help. She had come to know about him through a cable TV channel. The godman and his associate, instead of helping the woman, cheated her of Rs 63,000 on the pretext of solving her problems. He continued to demand money from her, and on a later occasion, even demanded physical intimacy.” Once, Sultan even tried to molest her when she visited his office in Yusuf Sarai village, Sharma said. An FIR was lodged at the Safdarjung Enclave police station, following which a raid was conducted at Sultan’s office. The accused was arrested, and a case was registered against the two. Police also recovered cash amounting to Rs 50,000, and a compact disk full of advertisements. Sharma said Sultan used to advertise on the local cable channel, claiming that he had supernatural powers which could solve people’s problems. “If anybody contacted his office, the godman would extract money from the clients, stating that it was needed for conducting rituals. At times, he would even ask customers to have physical relations with him,” she said. The godman, a school dropout, has seven siblings. His associate is still at large. |
