A 19-year-old youth Huzefa Merchant, resident of Abbas Villa on Takli Road, recently lost Rs 7,000 in an online deal, though he contends that he was aware that it was a fraudulent deal. A case in this regard has been registered at the Bhadrakali police station. According to the complaint, accused John Godwin and Peter Kola offered Merchant an iPhone for Rs 7,000. After the initial amount was paid, they demanded another Rs 7,500 for custom duty. Suspecting foul play, Merchant lodged a complaint with the Bhadrakali police. Merchant said he got in touch with the accused on February 2 through a website on which classifieds are published for various things. Though skeptical about online trading, Merchant said that he was ready to pay the money just to catch hold of the accused. "I spoke to the two accused on the phone. Later, from their conversation, I started getting indications that they were taking buyers for a ride. I sent them mails saying that this whole transaction was nothing but cyber fraud. But then they mailed me some certificates of their firm. Subsequently, I approached the cyber crime department of the police commissionerate to lodge a complaint, but a transaction was necessary for the same," according to Merchant. Merchant said that he then deposited Rs 7,000 in the city branch of the State Bank of India in the account number provided by the duo. After depositing the money, the complainant was asked to send his shipping address. On the day of delivery, Merchant got an SMS that one of the accused was taking a flight for Nashik from Delhi to deliver the phone. However, he said that he had some problems at the airport over Custom duty and hence demanded that Merchant deposit another Rs 7,500 in the same account. I was certain that the people on the other side of the phone were not in Delhi, but sitting in their office and cheating people as there was no flight from Delhi to Nashik," said Merchant, adding that he has all the phone numbers and bank transactions of the accused. Merchant added that even now the accused contend that they cannot deliver the phone because of the Customs snag. The Bhadrakali police say that since the matter concerns information technology, it will be transferred to the cyber crime cell of the police soon. Meanwhile, in another case, Kanjil Tamrapalli Srijeet lost Rs 24,305 from his bank account. In a complaint lodged at the Ambad police station, Srijeet said the said amount was withdrawn from his ICICI Bank account in Kerala. As the amount lost is not a round figure, it is suspected that either the unidentified miscreants have shopped using his card details, or they may be abroad and may have withdrawn the money in their currency, which does not shows a round figure, said Srijeet. |
