A gang of four, including a Nigerian national, who duped people, was nabbed by the cyber crime cell of the police on Wednesday. The accused used to send emails to the victims saying that they had won huge sums in a lottery. Sanjeevan Jyoti Bose, Sushant Kumar Sahu, Omchand Choudhary and Nigerian national Peter John Ekuvealor were booked for cheating and forgery under various sections of the Information Technology Act. A complaint was lodged by a businessman who started receiving emails from awarddepartmentoffice.uk@yahoo.co.ukfrom January, claiming that he had won $ 1 million in a lottery draw announced by Microsoft Promotion, UK. The complainant was asked to forward his resume along with a copy of his bank passbook and PAN card. In February, he received another mail from one Victor Murphy, who claimed to be the prize processing manager, saying that he would send a winner certificate issued by Microsoft lottery promotion, UK. Walter also asked the victim to pay 520 as transfer and conversion charges, which he did. Within a few weeks, the accused confirmed that they had received the amount. The complainant was also informed that one Victor Scott would be visiting India soon and he would have to keep the documents ready. The complainant was then provided with mobile numbers of three people- Sangeeta Kumar, who is supposedly an officer of the international forex department, RBI; Walter Murphy, the prize processing manager and one Bryan Richard, the commissioner chairman of United Nations from the foreign payment policy department in the UK. As per the directions, the complainant deposited Rs 40,000 in the account of one Gurjik Garewal in Belapur and another Rs 70,000 in the account of Shivam enterprises in Mulund. In February, the complainant started calling the given numbers, but they were disconnected. Smelling a rat, the businessman lodged a complaint with the police. The police arrested Sahu, who during interrogatiotion, revealed that Omchand had requested him whether he could use his account and would give him a commission for this. The second account holder, Sanjeev Bose, had opened a fictitious account under the name of Gujrik Garewal. The police also found that Bose had personal accounts in IDBI, in which there were transactions of more than Rs 50 lakh through international money transfer |
